The Art Of Creating A Community Of Church Members
They are many things churches try to create community, usually for the wrong reasons. To much time, money and effort are spent trying to grow a church instead of growing the people they have. It is my opinion that if a church is able to create community, people will come to be a part of the community.
One mistake churches make is they don't take the time to learn what peoples talents are, so they wind up using the people that do offer there time in areas where there hearts are not. This leads to burn out among those who do give there time. If a church would take the time to learn what talents are in there own church. they will find more then enough people to take care of all the needs within the church. People love be appreciated and recognized for there talents. They will stay longer if they can do what they are good at. Simply post a list of all the needs of the church on a board in the lobby and have folks check it on Sunday. You might add it to the church's website as well.
Another thing that churches can do to create that since of oneness is to post all the needs of the members on a board in the lobby of there church so that others can help there members. There is nothing worse then for someone to be unemployed for a long time while there is someone sitting next to them in church praying for the right employee to come along. It is all about the transparency of the church. Some churches even promote drive by random acts of kindness from the needs board.
One of the other ways churches might come together is by posting talents and job titles of the members in the church and for all those who are self employed to post there businesses and what service they provide or what they sell so the people of the church can support one another.
The last thing that will help is to create fun events for both adults and youth. Make sure to have times were just the adults play together. It is true that family's that play together stay together. This will change they way people view church from a building to a family. It also encourages new friend ships and better home groups. Creating a bowling league is a great way for all those who participate to meet most of the members in the church because the will be playing against each other at one time or another. If you can think of what is fun for your family, you might find the whole church might also enjoy doing those things together.
In closing create a place were people feel at home and they will be happy to take the trash out and even cook and wash cloths. So focus on all the people of your church and be concerned about were there are in there faith and do they feel conected.
